Assistant Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering
Dr. Qipei Mei is an Assistant Professor in the Civil and Environmental
Engineering department at the University of Alberta. His research is
dedicated to improving the sustainability and intelligence of infrastructure
and building design, construction, and maintenance. Dr. Mei’s research is
organized into three major components:
1. Utilizing AI technologies for design automation.
2. Applying computer vision and robotics to enhance construction safety and productivity.
3. Employing the internet of things with public participation for infrastructure and building
condition assessment (Crowdsensing-based infrastructure and building health monitoring).
Dr. Mei’s ultimate objective is to enhance the sustainability and intelligence of infrastructure and building
design, construction, and maintenance. His research is cutting-edge and forward-thinking, aiming to
advance the future of construction and infrastructure maintenance through innovative technology.
Dr. Mei earned his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2020. He also holds
an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, United States, which
he earned in 2018. In addition, Dr. Mei received his M.Sc. in Structural Engineering from the University
of Alberta in 2014 and his B.E. in Civil Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and
Technology in Wuhan, China in 2011. Dr. Mei’s professional experience includes working as a Structural
Engineer at SPS Technology in Ottawa, Canada from November 2014 to June 2016. He also currently
serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta, a position he has held since January 2021.
